The Best Safe Non-Toxic Sunscreen
This topic has been all over the news lately and it particularly disturbing to me. After learning about some of this, I went and pulled out all the sunscreen we have in our cabinets, and found that almost all of them have the harmful chemicals in them. UGH! I put these on my babies. Even my tinted sunscreen moisturizers, fairly new products, had harmful chemicals. Even my super frugal hubby, told me to just throw them away, which he never says about almost anything, we have old t-shirts he swears he is going to re-purpose, you get the point!
"The FDA announced Thursday that it has proposed a rule to declare mineral sunscreen ingredients as safe, specifically zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. The agency said 12 other chemicals commonly used in sunscreens need more research to determine if they're can be officially listed as safe, including oxybenzone and octinoxate." You can read the full article here.
PLEASE check your sunscreen for the harmful chemicals mentioned above if you haven't switched to a safer option yet!
First off, there are two different types of sunscreens.
Mineral Sunscreens (physical sunscreens) are the safer preferred sunscreen technology. Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide are physical particles that sit on the surface of the skin and scatter or reflect sun’s rays away from the skin. Mineral sunscreens are great for people with sensitive skin.
Chemical Sunscreens are technically sun filters. The vast majority of sunscreens on the market contain chemical sunscreen ingredients like avobenzone, oxybenzone or octocrylene. They’re called sun filters because they absorb the sun’s UV energy and release it back into the air as heat. They are popular because they provide easy, transparent blendability into the skin. The chemical filters have more potential for skin irritation.
